Shader World Plugin is an industry-leading terrain solution used by AA Studios and indie developers. Built by qualified engineers for scalability and high performance, it leverages the latest 3D rendering techniques to support terrain generation from smartphones to high-end PCs, and from small to planetary-scale worlds.
As an alternative to Unreal Engine Landscape, Shader World features an adaptive terrain topology that better respects topography and allows full runtime editing in packaged games—unlike Unreal Engine’s landscapes, which are static after packaging and are optimized for smaller scales.
Surface rendering is optimized at the lowest level possible, minimizing vertex data footprint and aligning with industry standards seen in titles like Call of Duty: Warzone. Terrains ranging from 1x1km to 100x100km or larger are generated on the fly without loading or visual popping.
Dynamic surfaces such as oceans are efficiently computed and rendered; default water maps use a simple sum of sinusoidal waves, which can be upgraded to FFT-based solutions. Generated surfaces can also serve as canvases for water-based simulations, such as those available via Fluid Ninja integration.
Shader World relies on GPGPU (General Purpose GPU programming) to generate surfaces and place assets, making it the only fully GPU-accelerated procedural world generation tool available on the Unreal Engine Marketplace. For a given terrain resolution, world surface, collision, and asset spawning are all generated deterministically on the GPU with only compute shader support required—requiring at least OpenGL ES 3.1 on smartphones and any desktop GPU from 2013 or later.
