 The Foliage Renderer v1.3.1 is a replacement renderer for Unity Terrain Tree and Detail rendering, utilizing Instance Indirect rendering for improved performance. It replaces Unity Terrain's native tree and detail rendering with a faster, indirect rendering path. Key features include GPU-based rendering to free up CPU resources, cell-based streaming and culling of terrain details, GPU-based frustum culling, and GPU-based HI-Z occlusion culling in BiRP, HDRP, and URP. The renderer supports up to four LODs per object with LOD crossfade, LODs on Unity Terrain Details, and single-pass stereo rendering. It allows passing terrain height, normal, albedo, and user-defined per-terrain data to vegetation shaders. Custom shaders and shader code enable terrain conforming and albedo tinting of objects. Per-object control over visible and shadow distances, as well as maximum LOD usage for faster shadow rendering, is supported. Compressed data structures improve processing speed and reduce memory usage. The renderer is compatible with The Vegetation Engine shaders and includes its own shaders and stackable components for Better Shaders, supporting albedo tint, terrain conforming, wind animation, and instancing. A shader graph node enables indirect instancing support for existing shaders, and a shader patcher allows modification of third-party shaders. A single menu option allows conversion of existing terrains to the Foliage Renderer, and all source code is included.
