Mobile Mixed Reality - Pseudo AR & VR with Google Cardboard XR Plugin v4.0 (15 Feb 2026) The Mobile Mixed Reality - Pseudo AR & VR with Google Cardboard XR Plugin v4.0 enables developers to implement Mixed Reality (MR) experiences in Unity for a wide range of mobile devices. Leveraging the Google Cardboard XR Plugin (formerly Google VR SDK), this solution blends Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) by displaying 2D or 3D objects as if they exist in the real world, creating an immersive interaction environment. Designed to support 80% of all mobile devices, the plugin offers cross-platform compatibility for both iOS and Android. With a 3-minute setup process, developers can quickly integrate VR and AR scenes without relying on third-party AR engines such as AR Foundation, ARCore, ARKit, or Vuforia. The plugin includes real-time AR shadows and an optimized gaze-based reticle pointer powered by TextMesh Pro, featuring two non-animated states for efficient performance. The package includes a demo showcasing object interaction in mixed reality, a background camera feed, a permission scene that requests camera access using the free native camera, and a loading screen for seamless scene transitions. Limitations include dependency on the Google Cardboard XR Plugin’s hardware and software requirements, restricted camera rotation and movement control, the need for Box Colliders on UI buttons placed in world space canvases, and the requirement that Google Cardboard devices have a camera hole. The plugin is still under active development, and users encountering issues are encouraged to search for solutions on GitHub.
